Our first Caribbean Clint project took us 550 miles south east of Miami to the wonderful Islands of Turks and Caicos. Located north of Haiti, and geographicallly the southern most islands of the Bahama Island chain is where you will find this destination which consists of approximately 40 islands and cays, eight of which are inhabited.
Relatively unknown a decade ago, the Turks and Caicos has really made a surge into popularity in recent years. This is for several reasons;
First of all, it is a just a short flight from the eastern seaboard of the United States and Canada making it a very easy place to get to. It is just over an hour from Miami, just under 3 hours from New York, and about 3 1/2 hours from Toronto. With many cities providing direct flights, paired with the appealing short flight times, it sets up this destination as a perfect destination for vacations, weddings, or short weekend getaways.
The islands are very concious about the the enviornment and is eco friendly. there are many protected areas such as all beaches and land directly adjacent to the beaches. there is also an iguana sanctuary on Little Water Cay, also know as Iguana Island. You will find many great Tours on the island such as kayaking though the mangroves, or biking on North Caicos. Turks and Caicos is also home to the 3rd largest reef in the world and is a fantastic place for snorkeling and an even better place to dive.
One of the big draws to this island is all of the fantastic resorts. Most resorts on this island are smaller, intimate and and emphasis on luxury travel. You will find many different types of properties and resorts that cater to all different travelers. Most of the properties have been built in the last 10 years making it a very new destination. With the presence of so many luxury travelers, has resulted in many restaurants to spring up all over the island. There are so many great restaurants on here, it makes it one of my favorite things to experience. Finally, lets not forget about the main reason why everyone comes to these islands! The beaches. The majority of the hotels and resorts are located on Grace Bay beach, which is a 12 mile long stretch of some of the best beach in the world. Constantly receiving awards, Grace Bay Beach with its white sand, and turquoise waters is a little slice of heaven. With a reef about a mile out from the beach keep the waters along this beach fairly calm, warm and clear. You just have to see it for yourself. Pictures or my videos just do not do it justice.
